Dream Job

What’s your dream job?

My dream job has evolved from something specific to a little set of ideals and hopes which are as follows:

  • It must involve travel and ideally first class travel. Shallow I know but I love travelling and any job that incorporates that would be wonderful
  • It involves reading and sharing what I’ve found. I don’t necessarily wish to write about what I’ve read but I do wish to discuss it
  • I would love for it to be closer to home. Everyday I long for working and living in Zimbabwe or somewhere that is not 23 hours away by flight.
  • It should help people in mind. I think an element is to teach but I don’t think I wish to be a teacher in the traditional sense but I do think I have some knowledge to share
  • It should have wonderful colleagues not perfect but people you can have a nice chat over lunch with. I have learnt who you work with is almost always as important as what you do
  • Finally it should allow me to control my own time and location as long as I accomplish the required tasks in a satisfactory manner

Photos and Airports

What makes you feel nostalgic?

From the moment I discovered a camera I loved taking photos. When I was growing up we used to take as many photos as we could with the only problem being how to process all the films.

The digital evolution of photography did not stop me taking photos and I currently have 46,228 photos on my phone (I recently deleted some). In my defence some photos are for content creation but a lot are just funny videos of my family, friends and places I’ve visited.

I often get into a mood where I think of someone or something and the photos and videos I have just ease that feeling of being apart from someone.

Another thing that makes me nostalgic is airports. No matter how happy you are to be going home, going to a new place you are always leaving something behind. I’ve moved quite a bit and so airports always stir up emotions for me. From the last time I saw this person, to the time such and such missed a flight or the first time I went home without someone.

There is a pause that I take in airports that is similar to the one I take when looking at old photos that can only be described as:

a sentimental longing or wistful affection for a period in the past.

Fun with Old Friends

What was the last thing you did for play or fun?

The last thing I did for fun was going out with my good friend from high school. I moved away soon after high school and remaining friends across 5000 kms is hard but I spoke to someone a few years ago that mentioned don’t hold on to the things you are missing but just hold to the parts that you still have.

So the part that we still have is no matter how long it has been we still laugh at everything. It used to be out playground shenanigans now it’s the funny things her kids say/do or just random work stuff.

We had some drinks, there’s a snake in the mix and a lot of dancing without that fear of “Am I weird?” that you get with new friends. With old friends it’s yes you’re weird and that is just fine and so it’s just more fun. I don’t know if that answered the question but the last thing I did for fun was hanging out with my old friend.

5 Tips while Travelling Solo

What skills or lessons have you learned recently?

I’m at the start of the my latest solo travel that I am hoping to document in great detail, I am refining the things that I already know about travelling.

  • Get to the airport early so if you don’t have a transit visa or your bags are overweight you have time to adjust yourself
  • Always have some cash. We know there’s a war on cash and we can feel like it’s not relevant anymore but it is. Wether for tips or bribes if you are travelling in tip/bribe required places
  • Learn to pack light. I have not perfected this skill but it’s a good skill to have because it avoids a lot of the stress you may meet at the airport
  • Always I mean always have enough funds incase you need to change your ticket, stay in a hotel or if you see something you simply must buy
  • Don’t panic. I know it’s easier said than done but whatever situation you find yourself in panicking will not make that any better.
