Quitting or changing course

What’s the thing you’re most scared to do? What would it take to get you to do it?

The thing I’m most afraid of doing is changing course in my thinking especially regarding my career. I’ve always been practical and somewhat done what I needed to but now I’ve been considering becoming more of a free spirit.

I’ve been considering taking a break from my 9-5 so that I can travel on a budget and focus on content creation as my 9-5. I already have so much content but working full time leaves no real time or urge to take on tasks that don’t pay.

I think if I had 6 months uninterrupted I would be able to complete my Mona Lisa. I think if I was allowed to control my own time I would be able to be more creative. I think if I was just a little bit more brave, I would take the jump away from stability into the great unknown.

Work aka Commute aka wages

What do you complain about the most?

I will start this post with the full acknowledgement that I should be and am grateful for all the blessings I have, but seeing is the post is not an ode to my lack of gratitude I will say the thing I complain most about is work. I am an advocate of the labor movement and am of the belief that “the labor movement is in shambles” so I find myself often complaining about different elements of work.

My favorite and timely complaint is the mandatory return to office. Wait hear me out. I know this is somewhat of a first world and white collar worker problem to have but still its emblematic of a larger problem between workers and employees. The issue is never if the work is done because when work is isn’t done there are many different metrics that employers have figured out to calculate efficiency. In fact if you fall below an adequate level of efficiency I believe they do something they call “firing you”. No the problem is not that work will not be done. The problem is trying to control employees time so if they are able to complete the required tasks in an adequate manner you figure out a way to pile more tasks on without paying them anymore. God forbid they use the extra time to spend with their family, friends or figuring out how to make additional income.

That brings us to the second thing I like to complain about. Much like what we keep hearing about inflation “it’s going down”, “we have brought it to an adequate level”, we should be really happy we are paying $20 for cooking oil our wages may be “up” but it seems like we still can’t afford rent, houses or the $20 cooking oil yet at every turn we are told wages are higher than ever and we should be happy and grateful. So we may not be the greatest mathematician but we can do the maths and see that the amount that we are getting paid and the profits we are helping make don’t add up.

To conclude, I like to complain about the state of employee rights in this current economic climate

And the winner is . . ,

What would you do if you won the lottery?

What would I do if I won the lottery? Well first I would be glad I finally changed my mind that lottery tickets are a waste of money and it’s better to buy a chocolate bar instead.

Next I would hire a financial planner and accountant because I have heard that a high percentage of people that win the lottery end up broke in 10 years.

Next I would buy my family members houses or gift who ever I wanted to gift. I’m not sure if I would tell them how I got the money but it depends on the amount of winnings.

I would then quit my job I’m not one of those people that will stay humble through work. I’ve worked many many years, any and all I can learn about work I think I have learnt.

Finally I’d start my world tour visiting different places. I would buy a globe, spin it and depending on where it landed I would visit that place. O finally I should probably gjve some money to a worthy cause.

To Read List

What books do you want to read?

As a lover of books there are so many books in my list. I’m trying not to buy any more books until I’ve read the ones I have especially the e-books that have been gathered and not completed.

  • African Philosopher Reader – Edited by Coetzee and Roux – Found it in the library then couldn’t remember the name then finally got the ebook.
  • The W.E.B. Dubois Collection – Blackmore Dennett – I’ve read some of it including For the Souls of Black Folks but haven’t finished the rest
  • The New Class War – Michael Lind – Probably one of the many books I have been recommended by one podcast or another.
  • The Pillars of the Earth – Ken Follet – Started it like I’m not sure when but I need to complete the book and maybe eventually the series
  • Winter of the World – Ken Follet – Read the first book but haven’t finished this one and the 3rd is waiting for me
  • The Federalist Papers – Alexander Hamilton – My friend recommended it

Those are few of the ones on the list but every year I also do a podcast book review episode of the books I have read, so maybe they list will be shorter next year or I’ll buy a few more to read.

Traditions in my Shona Family

Write about a few of your favorite family traditions.

We are always joking around in my family so whenever we are waiting for big news to take that edge off we never give the good news right away. We always pretend it’s the opposite then it takes a couple of attempts to figure out is it really bad news or is it really good news.

It’s good because when it’s actually bad news you have a little hope that noo they will tell me the truth eventually and if it turns out to actually be bad you have almost numbed the shock a little bit.

O another little tradition that we have recently stopped because somehow we are all “adult adults” is because we travel a lot we “take” each others things right before the trip and you don’t realize till you get to where you are going that 😮 “our” favourite is perfume is gone. Others may call that “theft” we call that affection to be returned on another trip
